1 Peter 2:24

1 Peter 2:24

24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.(KJV)

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree...Only Christ could ever bear sins on the cross. Christ took upon Himself the death for our sins, being made sin for us, and took our sin out of the way, having nailed it to His cross, that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit.(Romans 8:3-4; Colossians 2:13-14) Our sins had seperated us from God (Isaiah 59:2). The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). But thanks to Jesus’ glorious work we have been reconciled to God. For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousnes of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).

that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness,...We are new creatures, our old ways are no more; we have a new life of righteousness in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). He died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again (2 Corinthians 5:15). We are not to yield ourselves again to our old sinful nature, but we are to yield ourselves unto God and His righteousness (Romans 6:13). For if we continue in our old ways of sin, death awaits us. But we are the servants of God, called to obedience unto righteousness, because He has made us free from sin (Romans 6:16-18). We were bought with a price; therefore we are to glorify God in our body and spirit (1 Corinthians 6:20).

by whose stripes ye were healed...Christ died as our substitue, His stripes have healed ours. The death that we were to experience on account of our sin which seperated us from God, Jesus took upon Himself, healing our sinful condition before God, that we may have fellowship with Him. For we were under a curse, because we did not abide in God’s laws, and was subject to death. But Christ has delivered us from this curse of death and seperation from God, being made a curse for us. That the blessing of Abraham, which is righteousness by faith, might come to us.

Galatians 3:6-14

6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.(KJV)

This is what is meant from "by whose stripes ye are healed." It is a wonderful and beautiful thing which the Lord has done for us. Taking our sin upon him so that our severed relationship with God could be restored. It is a sad thing though, that people have changed the Word of God into a "no more sicknesses" message. It robs God, as well as those who believe and teach it, from the glorious truth of the message of the cross.

Lastly, it is important to look back to the passage Peter was quoting to gain understanding of what he was referring to.

Isaiah 53:5

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (KJV)

It is evident that Isaiah was speaking of a spiritual healing of the people of God who had seperated themselves from God with their sin. Here Isaiah points to the Messiah healing the relationship between God and man through the shed blood of Christ. To mistake this spiritual healing from sin to be a promise for physical healing is grave to say the least.
