People are often curious to learn more about Coach Joe after seeing the play of his pupils in tournaments. This page will provide some brief information and highlights on his chess doings and involvement.
- 1981 – Started playing chess on the school chess club which had one of the best programs in the state during his playing days.
- 1987 – Was co-champion in his division at state; tied for 8th place at nationals. Team took 3rd at nationals.
- 1987-88 - As president of the chess club, helped start chess programs in the elementary schools.
- 2001 – Started coaching home schooled youth in Indiana.
- Was the Chess Coordinator for the Indiana Home Educators Network. Has also written articles for their journal. Was also FSCL (Florida Scholastic Chess League) Homeschool Representative.
- Hosts chess tournaments and is a USCF certified tournament director (Level - Local).
- Instructed at MOSI chess camps in Tampa and the Florida Chess Camp. Has also hosted numerous camps.
- Was the MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry) Chess Director.
- Has been a tournament director at the Florida SuperState tournament, the Iowa State Grade Championship and Iowa Elementary Team Championships.
- Has coached 5 state champions, plus a number of top 5 finishers at state tournamnets in 3 different states!
