| Are House Churches For Today? |
A note before I get started. This article is written basicly to those that look down on house churches, looking at them as being cultish, or as not the way it is to be done.
Many people look at house churches as though they are odd, or cultish. While it may be true that some cults meet in houses, it is also true that cults meet in buildings that they refer to as a "church." So before one condemns a person, or a group of people they need to examine the fruit and doctrine that these places bring forth, before throwing up the caution flag of opinion, for what type of judgment do you want to be judged with? (Mt 7:1-5)
The purpose of this article are for those people who look down on house churches, simply because they meet in a house. What follows is a simple collection of verses that mention the church meeting in a house.
Rom 16:5
5 Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my well beloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ. (KJV)
1 Cor 16:19
19 The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house. (KJV)
Col 4:15
15 Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house. (KJV)
Phm 1:2
2 And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house: (KJV)
The church did meet in houses and has met in houses since the churches begining. Some think that it's alright for the church of Jesus Christ to meet in houses in other countries, like China, India, and Saudi Arabia, to name a few, yet these same people look down on others in the United States that meet in homes because there are church buildings for the church to gather in here, but they forget the fact that overseas there are church buildings for the church to meet in too, but do not. Where do you find in Scripture that the church of Jesus Christ must meet in a "church building" as opposed to a house? God's Word does not tell us that we are restricted to gather or fellowship in a certain place. So be careful before you pass judgment on someone because they gather together as part of the church of Jesus Christ in a house, and not a "church building."
