| One Day Known Only To The Lord |
Matthew 24:36
36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. (KJV)
This verse has been the main throttle for the imminent rapture. That this day which comes as a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2) will come without warning. The rapture being the next prophetic event to occur. I believe that Scripture does not back this claim up.
Upon further investigation on what day Jesus is referring to one has to ask themselves what day is it the only the Father knows? The answer can be found in the following text.
Zechariah 14:1-7
1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.
6 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:
7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. (KJV)
When studying the Bible we must not forget the law of first mention, the principle in the interpretation of Scripture which states that the first mention or occurrence of a subject in Scripture establishes an unchangeable pattern, with that subject remaining unchanged in the mind of God throughout Scripture.
In Zechariah we find the first place about an end time day as being one day known to the Lord. There is no doubt that Jesus was referring to this day in His Olivet discourse to the disciples in Matthew 24. There is no other day referred to specifically as being one day known to the Lord. Jesus wasn’t telling His disciples of a pre-trib rapture but of the great day of the Lord as seen in Zechariah.
Of note, I have either talked with pretribulation believers or heard such teachers talk about the last trumpet at the feast of trumpets being the rapture. Every year around the time of the feast of trumpets they start talking about how maybe this will be the year. The funny thing is they still teach that they will not know what day their Lord cometh. So how can they look to the last trumpet of the feast of trumpets every year and still claim that they don’t know what day He will return? They can’t!
